Some thoughts on the brief

Okay, it's almost a week since I got the brief, as the brief says I better put in something on my blog. Some good 300 words worth of it. So here we go.

Let me just write what I do understand from the brief.
What I have to do is examine the history and find out why the issue of enviromental constraints on human growth has not been a major issue on the lips of the public until recently. Along the way I would have to do some related readings. Comment on those readings. Write reflections. In the end present what I have learnt in an appropriate form.

Now, I just want to question some parts of the brief.
1. I don't understand the problem. The words under the heading 'the problem' just seems to be a very brief history of our enviromental studies.
2. The sentences following the heading 'what this brief is' seems to be very vague.
"An opportunity to make a real difference in one small corner of the world." Now, this sounds like we have to change our daily habbits and save a certain amount of energy we use everyday. This also seems to be the main topic of the text 'Cradle to Cradle'. How is this related to the brief?
3. Under the heading 'working in groups', I don't understand why we have to choose a topic. Doesn't everyone have the same topic?

This is a really like an email to Tania, but it's around 300 words, you know?

EDIT. I already asked Tania about point 3 and I understand it now! Thank You!

Lan, even though I could clearly tell you this via MSN, I feel as if communicating what I am about to say through your blog may be taken more seriously; and it looks better too.

Anyway, I have the same concerns. I'm fairly lost in regards to the brief. It almost sounds to me that if you just do lots of random research and develop crazy concepts answering (or semi-answering) the brief however don't develop anything of visual appeal or that directly relates to the topic your grade won't be as good?

Meh, no idea. Looking forward to getting "Cradle to Cradle" though, only so I can amaze people at party's by throwing it in water.

Cya Lan.

hi guys, i hope that after wednesday's session things are getting clearer. it is at a nebulous stage. the initial brief is a trigger. basically over these coming weeks you are confronting the issue at hand (the "brief " you were given) but ultimately writing your own brief (the proposal). I'm hoping wednesday helped, but ask again if anything is bothering you...

Hey Lan, Miek here.
I'm glad you're raising this stuff. This is more a response to James' comment about being lost as to what we're expecting.

So, as a designer, you've got all these great tools at your disposal. And you're also developing more. We want you to utilise both of these situations to push your designerly ways very hard to answer this brief. Your response will depend on how you and your group respond and react to the brief and each other.

The visual appeal aspect of your question—all depends on how you look at your practice. No we will not be marking on visual appeal alone. Actually we won't even ask the question 'is this visually appealing?' when we mark your work. But we will be asking you to be at full strength with every bit of your designer's arsenal. Visual appeal may be just what your project needs if, say, it needs to evoke a certain aesthetic. So your polishing skills and command of aesthetics could be really important, but it will vary project to project.

So I expect to see lots of half-answers. Or projects that raise more questions. Or that allow us to see other sides of the question.

And again, remember to enjoy yourself.
